The Old Sun

After my past few days at work, I'm ready for a few buckets of alcohol. Maybe here at The Old Sun.

But where is it.

I do like the geeky challenge of finding the modern location for old slides, and a few minutes of Google-Fu yields this possible location...

Name That Osmond

From the School Holiday sets, this is either Ibiza 1973 or Switzerland 1976.

From the apparent appearance of an anonymous Osmond, I'm guessing 1973.  But which Osmond??

The Grain In Spain....

So....I receive a box of Kodachromes in the post, and they're marked as "1965 Spain and Portugal". Oh how my heart soared at the prospect of sunny beach slides, with fresh faced teenagers in bikinis.

(Hmmm.  I'm sounding a bit Rolf Harris-y there.  Better stop doing that...)

And you can imagine my disappointment when a bunch of inept, underexposed cr*p emerged from the box. OK, I can understand that slide is not a very forgiving medium...by who in their right mind would retain such dross?  Mad people, that's who.

Bonus - Thirty Five years on, and I still love this track.

The traditional time for the the ritual humiliation of School Sports Day.

Wedding (with fungus)

Another slide from the Dene's Wedding set, and, yes, it is rather affected by mould, but it still got a certain charm. This was labelled as "PP from Westminster Church", and just to remind you, the wedding was 29th December 1941.Who knows whether the wedding was a wartime rush-job.

PS  Yes, Slide Guy is back online, after an unexpected outage due to a router demise.

The Bride and Groom Depart

Departing in one of the shabbiest wedding cars I've seen in a long time.

Bonus - The decidedly strange story of Barbados vs Grenada,  in a qualification round for the 1994 Caribbean Cup.

Own Goals and Bizarre Rules. Hmmmm.

Ashqelon

The very Acme of Tedious Slides.

A exotic location (Israel) and possibly the place that gave the name to Shallot,
and all that this traveller could do was photograph the road sign.  From inside the coach.

Dull.

Bonus - I liked this.

The Explorers

Slide dated Jul 197, but I have to admit that I'd have guessed a decade before that from the fashions / bikes.  Shows how good my estimation skills are.

Tasty.

Sheila in Glen Carron

Just a moment of solitude for Sheila.

No info on this slide, other than the scrawled title you see above, but at least Glen Carron is a region I know.

If you visit there (and I love the area) then I can recommend the Lochcarron Bistro

Fashion ... Turn To The Left !

It seems a while since the last Holling's Fashion Show slide, so let's correct that.

On the left is Jasmine, sporting the Trendy Doctor look.  A white sleeveless doctor's coat is worn over an ethnic print dress.

On the right is Henrietta, sporting the Hooray Henrietta look. Aalthough not visible, Hen is wearing men's y-fronts and a fifties Bullet Bra.

Yup.   Not much to say about this.

Looks like a Sud Aviation Caravelle, on the right, but otherwise... Dull.

Hello Ladies

June 1967.

The start of the Summer Of Love. The first flourishing of The Counter Culture.  The Year The Acid Kicked In.

The Beatles debut "All You Need is Love".

And this bronzed booby is oblivious to all this.

Numpty.

The Society Wedding Of The Year

Yes, tongues were wagging when Mr William Gladstone Featherstonehaugh married Miss Gladys "Chopper" Featherstonehaugh. Admittedly, they claimed to be third cousins, but...

After the rumours, it's no surprise that the bridesmaids chose to wear latex gloves.

Beware The Gnome

This Is A Public Information Service Blog .

Householders : Never allow a clan of gnomes to colonise your garden.  They may appear jolly and harmless, but at night, as you sleep, they will sneak into your home, tease your babies, hide your car keys, download gay sissy porn and steal your toilet paper.

Gnomes are no good.

The Sound of Russia

I'm sure most of you hep-cats out there will need no introduction to this location, but perhaps some of the youngsters may appreciate some guidance.

Obviously the large sinusoidal waveform and building sign "Resonance Study USSR" gives a clue, but this is the soviet institute for the study of "Brown Noise". So, you'll understand the need for the large bathing pool so close to the building.

Oswald Kirk

From the "UK Road Signs in 1975" Collection. This one is labelled as Oswaldkirk town sign, on B1257, October 1975.

Pretty inspirational.  In fact, when I write my award-winning novel, I may well adopt Oswald Kirk as my nom-de-plume.  Or maybe when I send threatening letters to the Daily Mail.

Bonus - Ah, the old days were the best.

A Trip to the Fish Market.

I suppose I should wax lyrical about this slide representing another time, another place.

Well, it is another time and another place...and yes, these dear ladies are shoe-less. So what?

Yes, I'm in a grumpy  mood.

Bonus - Lion cub  passes out after he gets his head stuck in a dead buffalo's arse.    Story tailor-made for The Daily Mail.

Climbing at Trembling Rock

Billy and Bobby, out scrambling around with Pa !

Colours have gone a bit UV, thanks to someone penny-pinching with Ektachrome. Still, I rather like the "other planet" vibe it now has.

I'll let the viewer decide.
