Wines of Europe

Sunny Saturday in Derby, and the perfect day for sitting in the shed (windy, and noisy from Donington), sipping some Gewutztraminer, and reading.

Pawnee Rock, Kansas

One-half mile north of U.S. 56 and the town of Pawnee Rock is Pawnee Rock State Historic Site, a monument to travellers on the Santa Fe trail. It marks the approximate halfway point on the Santa Fe Trail. The monument consists of a rough stone pole building used for picnics and a granite pillar shaped monument atop a small hill. (Pinched that from Wikipedia)

Bonus - If you want more info on this delightful town....

Bonus 2 - Naughty Tiggr

Chubby Babby

Now, those who know me know that I'm hardly in a position to throw stones, but... this little lad/lass seems to be a might....porky. Wonder how they grew up?

Bonus - RIP Poly Styrene. A true pioneer.

Pilot No.2 - And a Swarm of Bats

Bats, cunningly disguised as a very VERY dirty slide. It's not even worth trying to clean it up - just revel in it's dirtyness.

Bonus - Specially for Engineers - The Lego machine

Easter Wedding

Maybe because I'm a middle-aged bloke, but there's a feeling of melancholia that arrives with the sight of a Wedding slide. And looking at these lucky folk, I suspect I'm not the only one.

Bon us - Corporate Skull - Comic about a guy who gets his face ripped off in a photocopier accident. Still in early days yet, but I like it.

Saturday 23 April 2011

Lothario

I was trying to figure out what this chap was up to. Conducting an imaginary orchestra? Grecian Tommy Cooper impersonator? Then it hit me like a wet haddock across the face...

Carlos is demonstrating his nipple-tweaking technique.

Bonus - Episode two of "What's In Spock's Scanner?"

Ice Clowns

I've got a whole series of slides commemorating some family's trip to the Ice-Capades. Clowns, dancers, chorus lines, pretty girls, ice hockey fights...it's got the lot.

Oh Look - A Bird

Yes, a honest to goodness Hoskin's Starling - The Official County Bird of Derbyshire. Lives on discarded chips, and builds it's next from McDonald's' cartons. Tastes Like Chicken

Bonus - A story of utter rubbish, but an awesome URL.

Real Artist's hat

Every serious artist needs the ideal hat for their personality. Mrs Gladys McGloag has one, full of personality, and formerly owned by Pablo Picasso.

Her paintings, however, were unmitigated crap.

Bonus - Well, I found this History of Europe explained in maps interesting and informative.

Margot and Jerry

Deep in the heart of Esher, Margot and Jerry cut some blooms to decorate the scene of tonights wife-swapping party. Jerry is a senior account executive at a well-established merchant bank in London. (He wouldn't bank without a tie, so why would be garden sans cravat !) Margot is a leading light in the Esher Amateur Dramatic Society, where her title role in "Lolita" is still talked about.

Aww bless. Despite some questionable fashion choice, they sure seem happy.

Bonus - The Mountain Wow !

Some More ... Folk Dancing

Another slide from America, where they all seem so proud of their country...especially "the Old Country".

Here, some High School kids demonstrate the traditional dances of the Napoleonic era - the rather pretty girls in elegant flowing gowns, and the lads in frankly flamboyantly gay powder blue and cerise Hussar uniforms.

Bonus - If I was mashed up on drugs (other thn caffein) I could play with this for hours.

Nassau Basket Sellers

Your One-Stop Shop for baskets and woven reed products.

Bonus - I fear that there are still some folk who haven't experienced The Llama Song

Wednesday 13 April 2011

Lions Drag Strip

A little bit of history here. The Lions Drag Strip was a popular race way in Wilmington in Los Angeles. It no longer exists, so that dates this slide to the 1955-1972 era.

According to Wikipedia, it was mentioned in an episode of Mad Men, which is sufficient justification for me to post this bonus...

Tuesday 12 April 2011

No, don't visit. It's not worth it.

See?

Not worth visiting. truly one of the worst, inept, badly composed slides I've ever seen. It's almost embarrassing, but Tedious Tuesday demands fodder.

Bonus - On the other hand, this image is Pure Win !

If You Want To Get Ahead

...get a hat.

This Inca chief came from a box of slides from Peru - I'm sure we'll be seeing more from this set in the future.

Bonus - Actually, as I'm typing this, the music random shuffler chose some Yma Sumac. Coincidental or what?

Bonus 2 - Looks like the Thai remake of Downton Abbey will take some liberties with the script.

Angels in the Architecture

The title says it all...almost. AitA was also a new age / ambient / instrumental CD compilation that feature the staggeringly awesome "The Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away and It Doesn't Matter" by The Penguin Cafe Orchestra.

This building, I believe, is a cathedral in Brasilia.

Bonus - The sound of someone you love who's going away...

El Presidente's Chopper

El Presidente is clearly rattled by the Near-East democracy uprisings. Outside his holiday retreat, the presidential helicopter is ready to whisk him and his....well, basically just him away from baying protesters.

Bonus - Who fancies living in an abandoned cement factory??

Friday 8 April 2011

Unseasonal Weather

Cracking day here in Derby - it's early April, and the sunshine was devastatingly bright n warm. 'Fair worked up a sweat in the garden. So the cabin in this slide would have been a tempting option.

Bonus - Why clowns are scary

Thursday 7 April 2011

Stock Photo Opportunity

Yes, I know. Very Punny.

But it's true. Tourist chiefs will often install a gratuitous Olde Worlde feature, purely for the chance of 10,000,000 identical photos. History be damned.

Name That City

Quite a distinctive theatre, but do you know which city or town it's in? Perhaps you've already been there, or perhaps you can work it out.

I had no information on this slide, but I was able to use The Power Of Google to identify it.

Can You? Do you give up ?

Bonus - Local News

Tuesday 5 April 2011

Ummmmm..... Cat Birth??

Not so much a Tedious Tuesday Slide, more of a WTF Tuesday slide.

As far as I can tell, it's someone assisting a feline queen giving birth, but it could be almost anything.

Bonus - Cannon and Ball cover version of "Oliver's Army". No, REALLY !!

Monday 4 April 2011

Mr Albert Heage

Albert is a bit of a legend in Derby. He's the man who popularised the phrase "me duck" in normal conversations. Now, "How you doing, me duck" seems second nature to most Derboleans, but it's only 50 years since Albert introduced the phrase. Prior to this, the local argot used the phrase "ye todger".

Ironically, Albert came from Nottingham and was allergic to ducks.
