The Ravens of Death

A Hallowe'en wallpaper for you.

(Truth be told, they look more like pigeons, but "The Pigeons of Death" isn't  quite a effective.)

Bonus - I couldn't find a suitable Sun Ra performanc, but this might entertain any Ninjas out there.

Autostrada Etna Trip

Well, that's what the writing says, and who am I to disagree.

Still, it's a Bitching road, innit.   I'm intrigued to know whether the raised roadway is there to give extra time for escape if there's an eruption, or there purely because the ground is unstable. (I guess my engineering nature is showing thru' again.)

Bonus : Angry People In Local Newspapers.   Ronseal, basically.

Kit Carson

As we're getting close to Halloween - Heavens, Saturday ?  I must find a skeleton to scare the bejesus out of the kids - I thought you might appreciate a gravestone.

Not  just any gravestone, but the gravestone of Kit Carson, legendary American Wild West frontiersman, and the inventor of the Propelling Pencil !

No particular reason :

Guess The City

It's been a while since the last "Name That City" competition, so let's try a really tricky one. Using the clues in the picture above, try and work out which of the following cities it was taken in.

A.  Vancouver

B. Venice

C. Nottingham

D. Jerusalem.

When you've made your choice, phone our competition hotline, and see if you're correct. If you are, you'll get 40 Points, and what do points mean ?

Ferry on the River

Today's Tedious Tuesday slide is almost artistic.

Almost abstract in its content, and yet...still quite dull.

A Ninja Fruit Garden?

Well, there's a label bottom left : "Fruit Garden".

But where's the fruit ?    With the exception of a possible clump of rhubarb in the background, there's nothing visible.   But you'd be wrong. This is a Ninja Fruit Garden -  fruits skilled in the arts of concealment.

Show a moment's loss of concentration and...SPANG....  another success for the Shaolin Mango.

TraditionalBonus : Rod Hull and Emu -   OMG. Aerial problem foreshadowed !

Japanese Autumn

It's a cracking Autumn day outside - Sunshine, a pleasant breeze, and russet coloured trees.

Enjoy it.

Bonus - Don't go breakdancing with your cat

Schoolkids - happy to see you

MrHappy, one of the blog's regular watchers, told me that there haven't been enough funny looking kids on the blog recently, and you know what, he's probably right.

So, to correct that, have this slightly creepy shot of some Asian kids who seem genuine;y overjoyed to be seen and photographed. I'm not sure who, when, where or why, but I think that's some sort of zoo enclosure in the background.

Bonus - because you deserve it. What happens when a  "kid" writes to Charles Manson... Find Out.

Mrs McGinty's Pies

Were it not for the slight out-of-focus nature, this slide would be one of my absolute favourites. What's not to like?

Mrs McGinty herself - restrained pillar of her community, in widow's black, but sporting a fascinator and spoiling the look with a jaunty pinny.

Two fruit pies, baked with her fair hands, being portioned out for the Church Social.

The fresh-faced girl peeking around

The ample derrière of Mrs Lombardi, barely contained by her whalebone corset, just waiting to blow off.

What's not to like ?

Fish-Board

The hunter returns from the hunt with food.

Bare-chest, he announces his need for a mate.

To demonstrate his manliness, he displays his catch to the world,
by nailing three fishes to the fish-board.     Pillock.

Bonus - The Count Loves To *****

The Downhill Bay

To celebrate the return of Tedious Tuesday (it's been absent  for around seven days) let's take this chance to remind people that great experiences don't always translate into great pictures.

For example, I an imagine that Dolly and Bert had a wonderful few days at Downe-By-The-Sea, enjoying the gentle waves lapping at their sandals (worn with socks, natch). The view out into the estuary may have been idyllic, but.... this slide does not capture that.

The choice of a wide angle (probably no choice really) gives a great view of the sky...but that sky could just as easily come from New Zealand, Canada, Korea or Timbuktu. Ditto, the sea is rather generic. The only unique feature is the sloping horizon, and that's probably an error.

And those errors are just as prevalent with digital cameras, so quit sneering.

Extra - Dinosaurs. Remember that kids prog from the 90s?  Did you know it ended on a downer ?

Tinkling waters

Ah, beautiful.

The tinkling waters of a cascade. Pleasant on the eye, a delight to the senses, and the perfect place for a relaxing picnic.

And the perfect place to hide the bodies.

Bling for your Crib - 1983 Style

(Or at least, I believe that's the lingo the hep young kids use nowadays.)

Holy Heck. Can you imagine the home decor that would suit these pictures / clocks?   I vaguely remember these from my childhood, but according to the handwritten note in the window, this was in 1983.

1983.     It must be from a parallel dimension where Glam Rock persisted, and Punk Rock never happened.    Or perhaps this is from Liberace's Holiday Home in Bournemouth.

The Morning After

Urgh !

From the "English Spotty School-kids have Easter break in Spain" collection, specifically the "Lloret de Mar 1968" collection, here's the result of a heavy night on the Spanish Plonk. Two glassess of Sangria when the teachers weren't looking, and these teenage Lotharios are paying for it.

Thank goodness, teacher and trip shutter-hound Mr Stimpson was able to sneak in and capture the evidence.

Bonus Sensible Article - After Jan Moir's idiotic drivel about Stephen Gately's death, St Charlie of Brooker applies the Reality-Mallet.

"To be hated by the Mail is to know that whatever other faults you may have, you've done something right."

Beach Babes

If only it had been in focus, this would have been a fantastic shot.

Dating from the mid 1950's this is so of its time

I wonder what happened to the little girl. Fifty years on, is she a grandmother now?

Help! Keep Your City Clean

Another slide that baffles me as to why it was taken, but again I'm very glad that it was. Normal people, on a normal day, in a normal location.  There are too few slides of that criteria.

As an aside, it's nice to see that over-use of differing text fonts and sizes isn't a new phenomenon.

Ah. Life is sweet aboard HMS Venus.

Especially when tempting the officers back from shore leave.

Stay Back Of Fence

Penelope was devastated when her husband Stan died. Life just seemed empty ... pointless ... lonely.

Until one day six years later, at Kansas City Zoo, she saw a young Ukrainian Llama. There was something familiar about the glint in his eye. Something about they was that he munched Brazil Nuts. Something....well, it seemed mad, and yet...

Had Stan been reincarnated as a Llama?  The Tibetans believe that the Dali Lama was a reincarnation.... and Stan had once enjoyed a documentary about Tibet.

Could be !

Autumn Leaves

It's been a glorious Autumn day here at SlideGuy Towers. Kinda like this, but without the musclecar.

BonusAdvert. (Yes, it is an advert. Viral advertising works if it's good.)

Yay ! It's Rat Day

Yes, you're right. It is Ratatouille Day 2009. The day that Ratatouille Club meets to enjoy a day of home grown, home cooked food, and I'm looking forward to it.

So I was looking for a suitable slide to mark the day. Unfortunately, the one above isn't really ideal, but...darn... I like it.

As with many of my fave slides, the lack of background info makes it intriguing. What is the occassion ?   Backstage at WoodStock ?     Lurlene on the run with Cletus 'cos Lurlene's pa don't like her being in the family way?    Who knows.  Feel free to speculate.

Bonus.    Have a look at this picture (don't worry...safe for kids). After a second of two, you might spot something odd.      Seriously, What The Heck ???

Friday, 9 October 2009

Grrrrrrr !

Awwwww.  Friday Fluff

Cute little kitty, fur standing on end, trying to look fierce. (But failing).

Silly kitty.

Chester Queue

Ah, the fine city of Chester. Home to fine architecture and Britain's finest zoo (arguably.)

Also home to "The Creamery", a family baker that must be good : I mean, look at the queue of people waiting to get in.

Or maybe it's the Art  Gallery above.

Or maybe KingKabs, next door.   With Chester, you're never quite sure.

Ralph (Tired)

And you might think that urban loft living is an invention of the 1990s, but here's Ralph from the late 1960s.   After a busy day of Banking, Mergers and Stockbroking, Ralph likes nothing better than to chillout on his urban pad's rooftop patio,  snort a few g's of coke, and crash out.

Go Ralph  !

Whirly-copter

Tedious Tuesday demands something special from the slide selection, and this one almost fits the bill. Using my plane-spotting nerd skills (part of my day-job, I'm afraid) I can identify this as (probably) a Westland Wessex helicopter.

That's almost interesting.  Damn.

Bonus stuff... Damned Builders !

Dance, Wolfgang, Dance

Oops. Almost lost my "post every day" reputation.   Can't reveal why, but it involved  Strictly Come Dancing, a dead badger, a 240v power supply and a child's swing.  All may become clear in the weeks to come.

Or maybe not.

Catching Up

Mildred is clearly enjoying Richard Littlejohn's latest hate-filled, error-strewn drivel.

Other Blog - Sorry, I forgot to include a link to this. Some wonderful images....perfect Chrimbo Prezzies.

Dogs in Cars

Never a good idea, leaving dogs inside cars while you lope off to watch the footie.

In summer, you'll return to car full of decomposing dogs.

In winter, you return to windows, steamy fro the fresh dog turds.

Take my advice. Don't.

The Deluge

As you've all been very good, a treat today.

A simply stunning dramatic monochrome shot, that reminds me of  Gustav Dore etching. I'll admit that there's a bit of photoshopping to get the proportions right, but basically...this is the slide.

And  as it's the First of October... have a calendar.

Traditional Bonus - Obama replaced by cardboard cut-out.
